Gators go to Groupon to increase Alumni Association membership

February 21 2013, 1 Comment

Teams have sold ticket packages and experiences on Groupon for a little while now, but athletic development departments have yet to venture into the market. Until the University of Florida that is. Yesterday, the University of Florida Alumni Association listed a deal on Groupon for 2-year Single or Joint membership for $40 or $50, saving 50% off the regular price.

This is an interesting tactic for the following reasons:

  • Locks them into a 2-year membership therefore keeping alumni involved for a minimum of 2 years, revealing a return on investment in the future
  • A new customer acquisition technique and possible lead generator for ticket sales, especially since one of the perks is “Admission to Gator Nation tailgates before home football games”
  • Reaching new grads, younger demographic typically tuned into Groupon

What are your thoughts on alumni associations or fundraising departments going to Groupon to increase sales, membership, etc.?

Thanks for sharing this story Holly. The big question is what are the results… which we won't know for two years. How many used Groupon to join? How many renew (after two years)? How many make a donation? Hope you'll gives a report in two years!
